Danielle’s Challenge

When Danielle Garcia first heard about physique competitions, she was in law school. The thrill of working to look and feel her best drew her into her first amateur physique competition.While the other law students were out trying to relieve their stress by partying and gorging on late night pizza, Danielle was planning her training and nutrition plan and consistently putting in a valiant effort. Although she was doing a good job training on her own and following her nutrition plan she knew there was much more to walking on stage than just that.She needed to develop her entire stage presence package if she was going ever to experience a high level of success.She knew there was a better way, and she was committed on finding it. 

Danielle’s Journey

With her busy schedule, there was no time to take figure competitions seriously. She came to view “competing just once a year” as nothing more than “a fun challenge.” So, it is not a surprise that she didn’t place well when she competed.

She simply used the competitions as a way to keep herself somewhat motivated to eat a healthy diet and go to the gym on a consistent basis. As a result, she did not understand the importance nuances of physique competitions. For example, Danielle admits that she “definitely didn’t put too much thought into stage presence and posing.”

Danielle is a woman who focuses on one thing at a time and really does it well. Naturally, her focus was on her schoolwork, attaining that elusive degree, and passing the Maryland bar. Looking back on that period of her life she reflects: “After graduating I decided it was time to really put my all heart and effort into this sport.” This meant making some serious changes and finding someone that could put her on the right path. And that someone was Shawn Hektor Lewis.

Danielle’s Solution

Working with Shawn was like waking up by jumping into a bathtub filled with ice water. What she found by jumping into the situation with Shawn was an icy dose of reality that awoke her to her massive potential in the sport. Danielle went through a series of important awakenings. First, she watched video clips of herself and then compared them with some of the competitors that Shawn has mentored. Soon she understood that “Figure Competition Stage Presence matters!”

Next, Shawn encouraged her to look more closely at what the successful competitors were wearing and to contrast that with her own Figure Competition Suit. Danielle came away thinking, “Suit cut and color matter!” She then wondered aloud, “Who knew?” Shawn was touched by her innocence and reminded her that no one can become great in this sport alone.

Danielle’s Action Plan

The potential for greatness that lay dormant in Danielle was plain for Shawn to see. It would only take hard work, dedication, and following Shawn’s carefully tailored path for Danielle to unlock that potential. Danielle did her part by adhering to a level of discipline that she could not imagine while trying to keep up with the heavy workload in law school. Her nutrition was on point, she trained with a focused fervor and often made the more than two-hour round trip from Maryland down to Virginia to work with Shawn on her stage presence and posing. Shawn met her efforts, carefully designing a custom couture suit that would display the physique Danielle was diligently improving. As Danielle often recalls, “Shawn has been amazing since the day I first met with her.”

The next aspect was improving her poses. Shawn realized that Danielle was uninformed about how crucial Figure Competition Posing was in the sport. She set out to coach Danielle on the fundamentals of competition posing and to help her develop the fluid and confidence needed to compete on both the local and more importantly, the national level.

At first, the poses felt unnatural to her, and she began to feel lost in the process. Since she lived so far from Shawn, it wasn’t like she could just pop in any time she had a question. But Shawn quickly helped here overcome this obstacle. Danielle remembers how she overcame her posing woes with Shawn’s help: “her feedback on my posing was always enlightening and personal and if I ever needed anything in between sessions she was always just a text away.” Follow-up is one of the Shawn’s strongest attributes–she always follows up her posing sessions with her clients with additional support and coaching tutorials either via text or Skype to make sure that what you learn sticks.

Danielle’s Result

Danielle excitedly reflects on her first show as an official Shawn Couture Cutie. She felt invincible because as she said: “my suit was ready in plenty of time…leading up to the show,” and it was gorgeous. Shawn went the extra mile and accompanied her to the competition. There she took the time to do Danielle’s Stage Hair and Makeup in order to give her a polished and “professional” appearance. With all the stage presence improvements she had developed under Shawn’s watchful eye and the artistically crafted appearance, from her suit to her stage makeup, she had a profound confidence that was visible to everyone at the show.

The Recap

With Shawn’s help, Danielle competed three times in 2015 and became nationally qualified after only two events. Her third event was her first time on the national stage. She learned how to transform her body through disciplined nutrition and training habits. But she came to understand that to compete at a national level, how you train and diet are not enough to win.
